Like the Big Mac index, but for life's big costs: the average of building a house, a wedding, a dog, a week's holiday and moving home, each compared with the USA. How we estimate
What the index says
Switzerland is the most expensive place in our basket (138), and Egypt the cheapest (32). A score of 50 means the same things cost about half what they cost in the USA.
Building is where countries differ most: a standard house costs about $743,000 in Switzerland and $41,300 in Egypt. Holidays differ less, because hotels and flights are priced for visitors.
